By the team at Ecuador & Galapagos Insiders
You've been thinking about this trip for years. Not just any vacation, but the vacation — the one that gathers your whole family in one of the most extraordinary places on earth. Grandparents, parents, children, maybe even a few cousins. (Planning a multi-generational trip? We have a dedicated guide for that.) A week of giant tortoises and blue-footed boobies, of snorkeling with sea turtles and hiking across volcanic landscapes, of evenings spent together in a place so remote and unspoiled that it feels like stepping into a nature documentary.
As local experts based right here in Ecuador, we have helped hundreds of families from the UK and the US turn that dream into reality. Our land-based family packages are designed specifically for multi-generational groups: private departures, private guides, comfortable hotels, and itineraries that flex around your family's pace. Here is how it works. (New to family Galapagos travel? Start with our complete planning guide.)
Every one of our land-based family packages runs as a private departure. That means your family travels alone — no strangers joining your group, no compromise on pace, no awkward group dynamics.
This matters enormously for multi-generational families. When your group includes a five-year-old who needs an afternoon nap and a seventy-year-old who prefers a gentle walking pace, you need the freedom to adjust. On a private departure, your guide can slow down at the tortoise sanctuary because your grandson is utterly captivated, or add an extra beach stop because your mother wants to sit and watch the sea lions. The itinerary serves your family, not the other way around.
Both of our recommended packages are available year-round, on any departure date, subject to availability. You choose the dates that work for your family's schedule.
Your private naturalist guide is one of the highlights of the entire trip. These are certified, English-speaking experts who know the islands intimately — the wildlife behavior, the hidden viewpoints, the best snorkeling spots for beginners.
Because they are dedicated to your group alone, they get to know your family. They learn which child is obsessed with penguins, which grandparent has questions about volcanic geology, and which teenager needs a bit of extra encouragement before their first open-water snorkel. That personal connection transforms a good trip into a superb one.
We want to be upfront about one thing: our guides work on a freelance basis, so we cannot guarantee a specific guide on a specific trip. What we can guarantee is that every guide in our network is outstanding, and we match guides to family groups based on experience and temperament.

8 Days / 7 Nights | From $2,790 per person (Standard Hotels) | $3,370 per person (Luxury Hotels)
This is our most popular package for multi-generational families, and for good reason. The pace is easy, the itinerary is rich, and there is a full free day built in for your family to do exactly what they want.
Your route: Baltra → Santa Cruz → Isabela → Baltra
What you will experience:
- Walk among giant tortoises at a highland ranch — these ancient creatures, some over a century old, roam freely around you
- Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and learn about the conservation work protecting these islands
- Spend an afternoon at Tortuga Bay, one of the most stunning white-sand beaches in the Pacific
- Kayak to Tintoreras Islet and snorkel with marine iguanas, reef sharks, and sea turtles
- Explore lava tunnels where the snorkeling is sheltered and ideal for beginners
- Swim at Las Grietas, a dramatic volcanic cliff formation with crystal-clear water
- Enjoy a full free day — go diving, explore the town, take a glass-bottom boat, or simply relax
Why families love it: The easy activity level means grandparents and young children participate comfortably alongside everyone else. Family rooms and triple rooms are available. The minimum recommended age is just 2 years old.
8 Days / 7 Nights | From $2,970 per person (Standard Hotels) | $3,590 per person (Luxury Hotels)
For families with older children and active grandparents who want to cover more ground and more activities, this is the package that delivers. You visit three islands instead of two, and the itinerary combines hiking, biking, kayaking, and snorkeling into one tremendous week.
Your route: San Cristobal → Santa Cruz → Isabela → Baltra
What you will experience:
- Mountain bike through the San Cristobal highlands, past volcanic landscapes and endemic birdlife
- Snorkel at Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido), one of the most iconic dive and snorkel sites in the entire Galapagos
- Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station among giant tortoises
- Hike to the rim of Sierra Negra, one of the world's largest volcanic calderas — a one-hour trek with breathtaking views
- Explore lava tunnels and underwater caves by snorkel
- Spot Galapagos penguins — the only penguin species found north of the equator
- All equipment is provided: mountain bikes, helmets, kayaks, snorkel gear
Why families love it: Three islands give you greater variety. The mix of activities keeps teenagers engaged all week. The moderate activity level suits families who enjoy moving rather than lounging.

For a family of four on the Hotel Based Package at standard hotel level:
That is the Galapagos — guided, private, all-inclusive — for less than many European beach resort holidays. Ecuador uses the US dollar, so there is no currency conversion risk for American families, and UK families can budget with confidence against published dollar pricing.

The Galapagos is a year-round destination — there is no bad time to visit. But aligning your trip with school holidays while catching the best conditions takes a bit of insider knowledge. Here is our guidance.
February Half Term (mid-February): One of our favorite recommendations for UK families. You are in the warm season — seas are calm, water temperatures are comfortable for snorkeling (23 to 28 degrees Celsius), and the islands are lush and green. It is also outside peak tourist season, which means better availability.
Easter (late March to early April): The warm season continues with outstanding conditions. Sea turtle nesting begins, and you may encounter green turtle hatchlings on certain beaches. Two weeks gives you time to add a mainland Ecuador extension.
Summer (late July through August): The cool and dry season brings peak wildlife encounters — humpback whale sightings, waved albatross nesting on Espanola, and the islands at their most biologically active. Water is cooler and wetsuits are recommended for children. This is the busiest period, so book early.
October Half Term (late October): The cool season is winding down, wildlife is still superb, and visitor numbers drop. An excellent choice for families seeking a quieter experience.
Spring Break (March to April): Warm season with ideal conditions — our top recommendation for US families. Outstanding snorkeling weather, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures for children of all ages.
Summer (June through August): The longest school break aligns with the cool and dry season. Wildlife activity is at its peak, though water is cooler. Consider combining Galapagos with a mainland Ecuador extension — the Amazon, the Andes, or the cloud forest.
Thanksgiving Week (late November): The warm season is beginning, bringing pleasant conditions and a manageable trip length for a long weekend extension.
Christmas and New Year (late December): Peak warm season means the best water temperatures and snorkeling conditions. This is a premium pricing window, and we recommend booking six to twelve months in advance.
February Half Term and Easter offer the best combination of conditions, availability, and value for UK families. Spring Break offers the same for US families. Both fall in the warm season when the water is at its most welcoming for children. See our full guide to the best time to visit the Galapagos with families for month-by-month detail.

Galapagos Insiders is not a UK travel agency or a US tour consolidator reselling someone else's itinerary. We are based in Ecuador. We grew up here. We know the islands, the hotels, the guides, and the waters with a depth of knowledge that international operators simply cannot replicate.

Looking to combine your trip with a hands-on educational experience for your children? We can weave learning into any itinerary. Check our family packing list to make sure you arrive prepared.
This is not a trip you book through a generic online platform. It is too important for that. It is the trip your children will talk about for the rest of their lives, the adventure your grandchildren will hear stories about, the week that reminds your entire family why you love spending time together.
Talk with an expert insider. No obligation — just a conversation about what your family needs.
